Why Model Katy Syme Started Artemis, A Mentoring Service For Models

by
Karine

I had the privilege of interviewing Katy Syme (wearing our white Tunic Shirt above), plus-size model and founder of Artemis, a wonderful information website and mentoring service for new models. Her desire to grow Artemis into a community of confident young women, and share kindness and experience between new and experienced models is inspiring. Read on to hear how Katy started Artemis after experiencing her own struggles of getting started modeling in the cut-throat fashion industry and what keeps her inspired.

Please introduce yourself!

Hello! My name’s Katy Syme. I’m a model, and I just launched Artemis, an information website and mentoring service for new models in New York.

I believe there’s a big gap in the industry that can be easily filled with simple kindness and experience sharing.

Tell us more about Artemis NYC. What is Artemis and what inspired you to start Artemis?

Artemis was born from my own experience mostly! I moved to New York 4 years ago with no friends, no cash and no clients, and it was certainly a ride! Not necessarily a very fun one to begin with. The longer I was in the industry the more I realized so many girls are going through the same beginning; struggling to navigate a new city, and a sometimes harsh industry,, because as young self employed women, there’s not always someone to turn to for guidance. I believe there’s a big gap in the industry that can be easily filled with simple kindness and experience sharing. I starting writing a ‘handbook’ of sorts with information on how I was finding apartments, where I would go to have fun without spending a lot of money, the basics of how to do taxes etc. That info now lives at www.artemisnyc.co where you can also organize one on one mentoring sessions for more specific personal support and advice.

Where does the name Artemis come from? What do you hope to accomplish with Artemis?

Artemis was a Greek goddess - a warrior - and more pertinently, the protector of young girls.

The aim of Artemis is to grow a community of badass women running their own businesses (not often how modeling is viewed, but definitely how it can be) through kindness and encouraging confidence.

Artemis is all about mentorship. Who’s someone that’s been a mentor of yours in your modeling career and why?

I’ve been incredibly lucky to be surrounded by amazing people throughout my career. My agents at Muse have been endlessly supportive. Fellow models who became fast friends and confidentes such as Candice Huffine and Georgia Pratt have helped me navigate this crazy biz and have a fun time while I’m doing it. I find them both incredibly inspiring, they remind me regularly the importance of staying true to ourselves. My big sister is my eternal rock, and voice of reason. I’m so grateful for her support and cheerleading!

What is one piece of practical advice you would give someone looking to start their modeling career?

Don’t take it personal. Which sounds impossible, right?! This business is fickle. And it’s all about timing. Your success has no reflection on your beauty, or the person you are!

Learn your angles and don’t overdo the contouring - less is more!

The philosophy that drives And Comfort is the idea of finding delight in the everyday What’s something that brings you delight or keeps you inspired?

It’s probably food! I love to eat, and cook. I think sharing food is sharing love, and the music and feeling and people that come with the meal being served are almost always wonderful.

If it’s not food, it’s sunshine, or accessories!
